Early man used to be a predator before learning how to make tools and venture into agriculture. Even then, predation never ceased. Since all humans share the same ancestors, they are all predisposed to preying. However, we do not go out killing each other because we have a lot of restraint and will not act on just any thought or feeling. This does not mean that we can stop these thoughts, we normally decide not to act on them. Most adults will have at one point in their lives had the feeling to commit cruel acts to others. For instance, a heartbroken man will get thoughts of hurting their former companion. Victims robbed at gunpoint, probably still feel like tracing the robbers and clobbering them to nothingness. If you were to be honest with yourself, you will see that you have also thought about harming another human. It is a wickedness that exists within us. This is completely normal as it is part of human nature. The difference between the normal human and a psychopath is that the normal human never acts upon the evil

According to the Adlerian theory, human behaviour is purposive at least 99% of the time. The 1% lies within a realm known as the dark singularity. This is where man's predation tendencies lie and actions taken within this realm have no purpose. Any thought that crosses one's mind within this realm is acted upon. If one's mind relapses to this singularity and a thought comes across their mind to set their neighbor's house on fire, they will do so without any second thoughts. All actions done are also devoid of remorse or compassion. To a psychopath, anyone and everyone is a potential victim. The victimization they dispense also knows no boundaries as they perceive that it is deserved. Any person that falls into the dark singularity is led to this by a dark factor.
A dark factor is a drive to prey or destroy others. A serial killer will be driven by the desire to kill other people just as an arsonist will have an irresistible urge to set buildings on fire. Forensic investigators, legal authorities and researchers have questioned many convicted psychopaths to understand how they fell into their dark paths. In many cases, the psychopaths would have a strong dark factor that quickly drove them into the dark singularity. If one had the dark factor of torching houses, after repeated arson incidences, they would have fallen into the inescapable dark singularity. The dark factor would keep exerting some pressure on the psychopath to victimize others by torching their houses. These acts of arson will be done without any motive such as revenge and quest for power and wealth. Whatever evil thought comes into the psychopath's mind is actualized without any rationalization. In normal people, the urges from the dark factor would be suppressed quite easily. When uncontrolled, the dark factor forces one into a psychological tunnel called a dark continuum.
The dark continuum is the path that ultimately leads one into the dark singularity. Psychologists define the continuum as a progressive severity of irrational malicious thoughts and actions. Since all humans have a dark side, they can rank somewhere in this continuum. However, the normal dark thoughts will rank very low and this will mean that they are too far back in the path to getting into the dark singularity and becoming psychopaths. People that have committed atrocious murders will rank higher in the dark continuum. The areas in their brain that are supposed to empathise with other people will show reduced activity. After each atrocious murder, these areas will reduce their influence on a person’s decisions until a point of no return is reached. This will be at the point where they enter into the dark singularity and lose any form of guilt and conscience.
