A native of Kentucky, I graduated from the University of Chicago with a B.A. in African/African-American Studies in 1997. After receiving an M.A. in history from Loyola University of Chicago in 1999, I enrolled in the graduate history program at Northwestern and received my Ph.D. in 2006, thus completing my educational journey along the shores of Lake Michigan. I taught at Wesleyan University for one year before joining the history department at the University at Buffalo in 2007. I teach courses on the Civil War and Reconstruction, southern history, and historical memory.
