Jon and Maria Schaeffer are a young husband and wife couple living in Remagen, Germany, March of 1945. They are part of a secret Resistance project of citizens determined to help the Allies win the war, and with the last standing bridge across the Rhine at their back door, they're in a prime spot to help. Maria has just gotten her nurse's certificate and as part of the Resistance is asked to travel to town on the opposite side of the river each day to care for an injured soldier with hopes of collecting information. Jon is a translator on the radios and has been giving false reports. Will the Resistance be able to help the Americans in time to capture the bridge? What will come of Maria under Karlovy's heavy hand? This is a story entwined with sweet domestic discipline and harsh corporal punishment, intrigue, love and mystery.
