Before I Go to Sleep: A Novel

Total page turner. Could hardly stop reading.

It was honestly okay, that's the best way to sum this book up. It had its problems but at least it didn't commit the sin of being boring.

Very light spoilers ahead:

The book is written in a simple writing style(it's up to the individual to decide if that's a good or bad thing), which I would describe as "This happened, then this, and then this. I feel [insert simple emotion here]. Then this happened."

Overall believability is low, but it can be ignored somewhat easily due to the simple writing style and constant bursts of dopamine through something always happening. But as someone who loves and appreciates being explained how things exactly work in great detail instead of a few vague descriptions, I was slightly disappointed. The way Christine's amnesia is explained as short term AND long term amnesia, before being written off as emotional trauma at the end, was disappointing and annoying to me. Yes, a human brain can black out memories due to trauma, but I would've appreciated more descriptions regarding it. I'm just ignoring the doctor Nesh because it feels like I have more medical knowledge than him. And I'm studying economics and accounting.

The ending was underwhelming in my opinion? I'd describe it as ‘well that happened’. I had fun with the book, but the ending made me feel dreadful, and I had a noticeable feeling of needing to push through it. I was hoping that it would be better than it was, the ending felt rushed and it was very predictable(I predicted half of it). The whole husband thing made me roll my eyes(I'm unwilling to call it stupid, but I was unamused by it), and the ending was inconclusive(not necessarily a bad thing, I'm just saying a fact). It definitely left a lot to be desired.

However I think what I've read was Steven J. Watson's debut novel, and for its time, I can't say that it's terrible. On another completely random note, I saw some people being confused if the author was a woman or man due to the way that Christine was sometimes described and how she acted. I personally didn't have that problem since my copy of the book had 'Steven J. Watson' on it, but I saw that many just had 'S.J. Watson', and the unnecessary difference is slightly weird to me. But even without the male name on the cover, I feel like a person can just tell if a woman inside the book(especially the female lead) was written by a man or a woman. Needless to say, it was obvious to me that it was a man.
